Continue reading »]]> More than 20 private gardens will be open to the public during this year’s Moseley in Bloom Open Gardens Weekend on June 16-17.

Organised by an award-winning volunteer group that last year became a registered charity, the event offers an opportunity to view a range of gardens highlighting the suburb’s horticultural diversity.

Flower-filled courtyards, traditional family gardens, allotments and public spaces will be open from 1pm until 5.30pm.

An addition to the Open Gardens Weekend is the Moor Green Allotment site on the edge of Cannon Hill Park.

“The sheer size of the area is likely to come as quite a revelation to visitors,” said John Mattick, chair of the Open Gardens Group.

“We have organised live refreshment points on route offering traditional afternoon teas and delicious cakes.

“This year’s children’s trail has an Olympic theme and on Sunday there will be an energetic performance by the Border Morris Brethren of Kings Heath.”

Carol Miller, chair of Moseley in Bloom, said: “We want to ensure that Moseley continues to be one of the most attractive villages in the region so the funds we raise will help us continue our work to improve and regenerate the area.”

Billesley Lane Allotments will also be showing off conservation projects that have been undertaken there.

Tickets cost £5 or £7.50 for both days. Volunteers are being sought to help.

The weekend will take place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June.

We are looking for gardens of all shapes and sizes to take part this year to help keep keep the event fresh and exciting.

The Open Gardens weekend helps to raise funds for the charity so that various projects can continue such as supporting various sheltered housing schemes, permanent planting projects and working alongside schools.

Continue reading »]]> Moseley in Bloom will be launching its 2012 campaign on the weekend of 24^th and 25^th March and this year already looks to be action packed!

The Saturday will see the return of our stall on the award winning Moseley Farmers Market. Not only will you be able to purchase various springtime plants at the stall to help your garden and house escape the winter blues, but you will also be able to sign up as a “Friend of Moseley in Bloom” supporting the Moseley in Bloom initiative further and entitling you to a free Open Gardens ticket (which you will be able to collect on the day of the Open Gardens) along with other benefits!

The stall will also enable you to have a sneak peak of the work taking place with Queensbridge School on an anti-litter campaign which will hit Moseley during 2012.

From 10.30am on the Sunday sees the first of our Volunteers Weekends where we will be starting the second phase of the Car Park project. This exciting part of the project looks to improve the bedding area located next to Kingfishers (on the left hand side as you enter the car park). Improvements are designed to help ensure the area is safer, removing the pathway behind the laurels and ensuring a more attractive entrance for visitors of Moseley.

Preparation work will also be taking place on the Sunday at St Mary’s Church to create a wild-flower area – the start of an ambitious project which hopes to grow year on year in size. This links directly to the Royal Horticulture Society’s campaign to introduce more pollinating plants to help protect the vital insects such as butterflies, moths, hover-flies and bees that enable us to bloom each year…

We are seeking volunteers to help us on this day (which also coincides with the monthly car park clear up) so do please come along if you can along with any tools such as loppers, forks and spades. Don’t let the fear of hard grafting get to you however as there is plenty of lighter work available. You support is much needed! Help us to make Moseley to sparkle ready for Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations!

Continue reading »]]> The Challenge teamed up with Moseley in Bloom in September helping to kick-start their 2012 campaign!

The Challenge is a charity sponsored by the Government that brings young people together from diverse backgrounds and throws them in at the deep end. They take on physical, social and civic challenges that prepare them to design and deliver a project that will make a difference in their community. Along the way they learn key skills such as teamwork, leadership and communication, and are encouraged to develop trust in others, responsibility for themselves, understanding and empathy.

Two teams from The Challenge  came to visit  Moseley on two consecutive Sundays to help in two different projects. The first  group of young people helped to clear a garden at sheltered housing scheme for adults with Learning difficulties down Church Road in preparation for Moseley in Bloom to work with the residents for planting up in the spring. The following Sunday another group came and helped us to plant over 1000 spring  bulbs in Moseley Car Park – ensuring that Moseley will become a visually vibrant place to visit in early spring 2012.

Moseley in Bloom and The Chalenege will be teaming up in future years. Carol Miller, Chair of Moseley in Bloom quoted:

Continue reading »]]> On Tuesday 8th November, Moseley in Bloom held its annual awards night at The Cross in Moseley. These awards are made to the people and establishments that have shown particular support for Moseley in Bloom throughout the season – helping them to win Gold. It is also an opportunity for Moseley in Bloom to celebrate their achievements with local residents and businesses.

Since the introduction of the awards, a certain element of competition has grown up within the community and the awards are usually prominently displayed for customers and clients to see.

The judging for the awards were unannounced so there can be no special preparation. The judges this year were James Brain of Oulsnam’s Estate Agents, Mike Currie of Birmingham Parks and Nurseries, Nikki Carr, Town Centre Manager for Moseley and Kings Heath and Alison Millward from Reddings Road Residents’ Association.

Adam Styler, Deputy Chair of Moseley in Bloom said “This is a great opportunity for us to say thank you to our community for the support they have shown us – whether it be volunteering in the many projects undertaken or ensuring that they do their bit to make Moseley a pleasant and vibrant place to live, work and socialise. The support and well wishes received from everyone are very encouraging for our volunteer group. Well done to all who have taken part in 2011.”

Fantastic news – Moseley wins Gold in the regional Heart of England in Bloom Awards and announced as Category Winners! A big well done to everyone who supported Moseley in Bloom this year – this is the fifth consecutive year we have won Gold and the 4th year we have been category winners (3rd time consecutively)! That is no mean feat.

Moseley in Bloom also scooped up a fantastic Silver award at the Britain in Bloom celebrations in St Andrews. The competition was stiff but this is great testament to the volunteers and local businesses in Moseley.

Jan Miller, who has chaired Moseley in Bloom for the past three year was given an RHS Britain in Bloom Community Champion Award.  The RHS quoted:

 “Jan is a key player in the Moseley in Bloom group. She has left no stone unturned in order to brighten up many pockets of land which were previously neglected. She has the drive to encourage people to go the extra mile in order to achieve the desired outcome. Jan operates in a very professional manner and brings all of her many skills to the table in order to further Moseley in Bloom. The Judges are therefore delighted to recognise Jan with the Community Champion Award.”

We are very proud of her achievement and would like to thank her for all her work for Moseley in Bloom. Jan has now moved on to pastures new away from Moseley. The team wish her every success in the future.

A big well done also to Kings Heath Floral Trail who also won gold this year and go through to represent the region in 2012 for the National Britain in Bloom Awards. Moseley in Bloom will be looking at ways to support their counterparts for that national competition.

Balsall Heath also did acheived well and wond a Silver Gilt award!

Yes the time has come where we will shortly be judged – on two separate occasions!

The first is for the Regional Heart of England in Bloom campaign which takes place on Tuesday 12^th July (in the afternoon). Fingers are crossed that it won’t rain this time!

The second is for the national judges of the Britain in Bloom campaign which takes place on Friday 5^th August. We represent our region in this highly competitive round – representing the “Urban Communities” category. The judges are notoriously more difficult to impress but we are confident we can do Moseley justice! Can Moseley achieve a Gold?

Help us to ensure Moseley shines on both of these days and ensure that your areas are grot free.

We have some volunteering opportunities too to help us achieve our goals and we would love to see you there… We need all the help we can get!

2011 Sunday Garden Guide

As well as new gardens added to this year’s event, we also have a new addition  – a childrens trail which you can be sure will keep your little ones entertained.

Otherwise the format for this year’s event remains the same but with more new gardens to view. Gardens will be open between 1.00pm and 5.30pm and this year around two thirds will be new to the event.

You will be struck by the amazing diversity of gardens for view this year. Big gardens, small ones, some professionally designed, some themed, some evolved organically – but all loved by their owners. There really is something for everyone.

On Saturday 18th Moseley west-side (i.e. west of the Alcester Road), will feature Park Hill, where The Grange will be open so that visitors can see the progress that residents, with assistance from MIB are making in restoring their garden; Reddings Road; Moorcroft Road; the Dovecote; and Moseley Hall Hospital. The latter will enable visitors to see something of the way in which gardening is being used as a therapeutic activity for patients and of MIB’s contribution to this.

On Sunday 19th, in Moseley east-side, approximately 12 gardens will be open in Greenend Road; Greenhill Road; Thornley Close (off Cambridge Road); Southlands Road; Dyott Road; St Agnes Road; and Billesley Lane Allotments will be joining us with their Open Day.

Refreshments and plant stalls will be available on both days to quench your thirst.

So, put the dates in your diary and come along!

The team will be focusing on Phase 1 of the Moseley Village Car Park project lead by Moseley in Bloom along with other community gardening activities around Moseley Village Centre.

Help us stop the rot, clear the grot – clean up and plant up a dazzling display of flowers!

Also help us to raise funds for the many projects Moseley in bloom participates in by volunteering to help us on the Moseley in Bloom Open Gardens Weekend which takes place on 18th & 19th of June!

Moseley Village Car Park Phase 1 – Call to Arms!

Saturday 14^th May (12.00pm onward) & Sunday 15^th May (11.00am onwards)

This is the weekend in which we will be preparing the top right part of the car park to ensure we can plant out in June.

All hands on deck will be required on this weekend as there is plenty of work to do.

Glenn Fraser has designed what the area will look like but it will need our help to ensure we can get it ready for planting.

We will be meeting in the car park (opposite The Cross) from 12.00pm on Saturday and also from 11.00am on Sunday. Please do come along – we need as much support as we can for this project.

Open Gardens Weekend – Volunteers Needed!

Yes it’s here again! Moseley opens its gardens once again to show its hidden treasures to the public.

This is the biggest fundraising event of the year for Moseley in Bloom and there are even some new additions to the event. Help is needed to help sell the tickets and man the refreshments on both of these days.
