The Challenge is a charity sponsored by the Government that brings young people together from diverse backgrounds and throws them in at the deep end. They take on physical, social and civic challenges that prepare them to design and deliver a project that will make a difference in their community. Along the way they learn key skills such as teamwork, leadership and communication, and are encouraged to develop trust in others, responsibility for themselves, understanding and empathy.

Two teams from The Challenge came to visit Moseley on two consecutive Sundays to help in two different projects. The first group of young people helped to clear a garden at sheltered housing scheme for adults with Learning difficulties down Church Road in preparation for Moseley in Bloom to work with the residents for planting up in the spring. The following Sunday another group came and helped us to plant over 1000 spring bulbs in Moseley Car Park – ensuring that Moseley will become a visually vibrant place to visit in early spring 2012.

Moseley in Bloom and The Chalenege will be teaming up in future years. Carol Miller, Chair of Moseley in Bloom quoted:

“This is a fantastic opportunity to work with such an enthusiastic and talented group of young people. Their help and support this year has enabled us to kick-start some projects ready for the 2012 season. Their hard work at both the sheltered housing scheme and at the Car Park will improve the lives of the people in Moseley. We look forward to working more closely with The Challenge in the future.”

On Tuesday 8th November, Moseley in Bloom held its annual awards night at The Cross in Moseley. These awards are made to the people and establishments that have shown particular support for Moseley in Bloom throughout the season – helping them to win Gold. It is also an opportunity for Moseley in Bloom to celebrate their achievements with local residents and businesses.

Since the introduction of the awards, a certain element of competition has grown up within the community and the awards are usually prominently displayed for customers and clients to see.

The judging for the awards were unannounced so there can be no special preparation. The judges this year were James Brain of Oulsnam’s Estate Agents, Mike Currie of Birmingham Parks and Nurseries, Nikki Carr, Town Centre Manager for Moseley and Kings Heath and Alison Millward from Reddings Road Residents’ Association.

Adam Styler, Deputy Chair of Moseley in Bloom said “This is a great opportunity for us to say thank you to our community for the support they have shown us – whether it be volunteering in the many projects undertaken or ensuring that they do their bit to make Moseley a pleasant and vibrant place to live, work and socialise. The support and well wishes received from everyone are very encouraging for our volunteer group. Well done to all who have taken part in 2011.”

And the winners are…

A big well done to everyone who supported Moseley in Bloom this year – this is the fifth consecutive year we have won Gold and the 4th year we have been category winners (3rd time consecutively)! That is no mean feat.

Moseley in Bloom also scooped up a fantastic Silver award at the Britain in Bloom celebrations in St Andrews. The competition was stiff but this is great testament to the volunteers and local businesses in Moseley.

Jan Miller, who has chaired Moseley in Bloom for the past three year was given an RHS Britain in Bloom Community Champion Award. The RHS quoted:

“Jan is a key player in the Moseley in Bloom group. She has left no stone unturned in order to brighten up many pockets of land which were previously neglected. She has the drive to encourage people to go the extra mile in order to achieve the desired outcome. Jan operates in a very professional manner and brings all of her many skills to the table in order to further Moseley in Bloom. The Judges are therefore delighted to recognise Jan with the Community Champion Award.”

We are very proud of her achievement and would like to thank her for all her work for Moseley in Bloom. Jan has now moved on to pastures new away from Moseley. The team wish her every success in the future.

A big well done also to Kings Heath Floral Trail who also won gold this year and go through to represent the region in 2012 for the National Britain in Bloom Awards. Moseley in Bloom will be looking at ways to support their counterparts for that national competition.

Balsall Heath also did acheived well and wond a Silver Gilt award!

Well done all!

Firstly we had a great start to the year with our Moseley Farmers Market Stall on Saturday 26th March where many people came to buy produce to help fund various intitatives for Moseley in Bloom. On the day we also conductied a survey to engage with the public to find out their views of Mosleey, the Birtiain in Bloom campaign and how Moseley in Bloom assists with the community. This will help us identify areas where we can improve and help support our community further. Watch this space for the results!

Secondly – did you hear our very own co-chair Carol Miller on the Radio? There were two chances to catch up on what Moseley in Bloom had planned over the weekend when Carol was interviewed on the Molly Green Breakfast show (BBC Radio WM) and then by Carl Chinn on his Sunday morning show, again on BBC Radio WM. Community Horticulture Manager for the RHS Stephanie Enyon was also interviewed by Carl who gave a bigger picture as to what the Britain in Bloom campaign.

Then on Sunday the Sunday mornging of 27th March Birmingham City Parks & Nurseries, members from Cannon Hill Peoples Park and Volunteers from the community came out in force to plant over 300 tree saplings at the Queen Mothers Plantation in Cannon Hill Park. The sapplings included hazel, hawthorne, birch, rowan, cherry and dogwood to ensure there is year round colour.

Another 120 tree saplings were planted in other areas of Moseley including St Marys Church, Woodbridge Road and Coppice Oaks by volunteers.

The launch coincided with the RHS Britan in Bloom Launch 2011 launch who teamed up with the Woodland Trust to give away up to 200,000 free tree saplings to RHS Britain in Bloom 2011 Finalists – including Moseley in Bloom. Both the RHS and the Woodland Trust are supporting the United Nation’s 2011 International Year of Forests to raise awareness of conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and recognise the benefits trees bring to our wildlife and communities.

A big thank you froim Moseley in Bloom goes out to everyone who turned out and planted the tree sapplings over the weekend and turned out for the Farmers Market which made the weekend such a huge success.

Moseley in Bloom will be celebrating the launch of the RHS Britain in Bloom campaign on Saturday 26th March with their first Farmers Market of the year and then planting over 300 tree saplings on Sunday 27th March from 11.00am.

Volunteers will be rolling up their sleeves to be part of a tree planting movement to double native trees and woods in the UK. This year more than 300 tree saplings will be planted by Moseley in Bloom volunteers at Moseley Millennium Wood in Cannon Hill Park – supplementing the planting that was originally carried out in 2000 with another 120 tree saplings in other sites in and around Moseley.

The RHS Britain in Bloom has teamed up with the Woodland Trust to give away up to 200,000 free tree saplings to RHS Britain in Bloom 2011 Finalists – including Moseley in Bloom. Both the RHS and the Woodland Trust are supporting the United Nation’s 2011 International Year of Forests to raise awareness of conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and recognise the benefits trees bring to our wildlife and communities.

Back in 2005 a tornado struck Kings Heath, Moseley and Balsall Heath wreaking destruction and uprooting many old street trees. Moseley in Bloom then recently formed a mission to replace the many street trees that were destroyed – planting over 157 street trees to date.

Moseley in Bloom volunteers of all ages will be planting hazel, hawthorn, birch, rowan, cherry and dogwood saplings to give year round colour at Moseley Millennium Wood, Cannon Hill Park (near Holders Lane) between 11am-1pm on Sunday 27th March. Moseley in Bloom is inviting anyone to come along and take part. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Moseley in Bloom on 07588 868 533 or email info@moseleyinbloom.org.uk.

RHS Britain in Bloom showcases the very best in community horticulture and attracts thousands of entrants each year. A total of 77 cities, towns, villages and urban communities from across the UK have made it through to the 2011 finals – including Moseley in Bloom who will wait with baited breath until the September awards ceremony in St. Andrews to see how they have fared.

Adam Styler, Moseley in Bloom Volunteer Coordinator, said, “Since the tornado destruction in 2005, Moseley in Bloom have embarked on a tree planting initiative to replace those that were lost. This helps to build upon that campaign. This is a great opportunity for our community to be part of a national event helping to develop the Moseley Millennium Woodland planting that started here in November 2000. Not only are we helping to double the amount of woodland in the UK – making it a more pleasant place for us to live, but we will also be making a significant improvement for the local wildlife that is struggling to survive in our ever growing city.”

Stephanie Eynon, Community Horticulture Manager, RHS, said, “RHS Britain in Bloom and RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood enables people to join together to improve their local communities and restore civic pride through long-term, sustainable projects which are also beneficial for wildlife. We are delighted to be partnering with the Woodland Trust in order to focus this year’s launch on trees.”

The night was hosted by non other than Craig Donovan.

The awards give public recognition to some of the people and businesses that are a credit to the community. The original concept was to encourage everybody to take part in improving the local environment and to make the village look as attractive as possible.

This year the judges were Tim Oakes of Birmingham Parks & Nurseries, Tony Thapar of the Moseley Community Development Trust and James Llewellyn of Chamberlains Estate Agency who toured Moseley in August to mark various properties on their horticultural display and tidiness of their premises.

This year sees an extra category called Most Evergreen Elders—an award to recognise those in residential homes. Once again our thanks go out to Samantha McEwan who kindly created the new trophy for this award.

The night was enjoyable and fun and we must say a huge thank you to Earlswood Nursuries who donated raffle prizes of £100 in Landscaping vouchers and two prizes of £50 bedding plant vouchers.

We are happy to announce that the winners for 2010 are:

If you haven’t already heard, the volunteers of Moseley in Bloom won two awards this year for their work and endeavors to enhance the local community.

Firstly, the regional Heart of England judges awarded the Gold and Category winners award to Moseley in Bloom on September 16th. Then on 29th October, Moseley in Bloom was awarded a Silver Gilt award at the prestigious awards ceremony held at the Centenary Centre for the national Britain in Bloom campaign.

These are excellent awards to receive and shows just how much hard work and dedication volunteers and businesses have put in for the community in which we work, live and socialise in. The Urban Communities category was the most difficult category to be entered into and had the highest number of entries.

The impression we received when visiting the judges their open surgery of 30th September on was that we were not far away from the Gold so it gives us something to strive for in the near future!

Whilst we are thoroughly proud with the results, there is plenty more for us to do to enhance our community!
