Well what a successful Launch to the 2011 Moseley in Bloom Campaign! Firstly we had a great start to the year with our Moseley Farmers Market Stall on Saturday 26th March where many people came to buy produce to help fund various intitatives for Moseley in Bloom. On the day we also conductied a survey to engage with the public to find out their views of Mosleey, the Birtiain in Bloom campaign and how Moseley in Bloom assists with the community. This will help us identify areas where we can improve and help support our community further. Watch this space for the results!

Secondly – did you hear our very own co-chair Carol Miller on the Radio? There were two chances to catch up on what Moseley in Bloom had planned over the weekend when Carol was interviewed on the Molly Green Breakfast show (BBC Radio WM) and then by Carl Chinn on his Sunday morning show, again on BBC Radio WM. Community Horticulture Manager for the RHS Stephanie Enyon was also interviewed by Carl who gave a bigger picture as to what the Britain in Bloom campaign.

Then on Sunday the Sunday mornging of 27th March Birmingham City Parks & Nurseries, members from Cannon Hill Peoples Park and Volunteers from the community came out in force to plant over 300 tree saplings at the Queen Mothers Plantation in Cannon Hill Park. The sapplings included hazel, hawthorne, birch, rowan, cherry and dogwood to ensure there is year round colour.

Another 120 tree saplings were planted in other areas of Moseley including St Marys Church, Woodbridge Road and Coppice Oaks by volunteers.

The launch coincided with the RHS Britan in Bloom Launch 2011 launch who teamed up with the Woodland Trust to give away up to 200,000 free tree saplings to RHS Britain in Bloom 2011 Finalists – including Moseley in Bloom. Both the RHS and the Woodland Trust are supporting the United Nation’s 2011 International Year of Forests to raise awareness of conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and recognise the benefits trees bring to our wildlife and communities.

A big thank you froim Moseley in Bloom goes out to everyone who turned out and planted the tree sapplings over the weekend and turned out for the Farmers Market which made the weekend such a huge success.

Volunteers will be rolling up their sleeves to be part of a tree planting movement to double native trees and woods in the UK. This year more than 300 tree saplings will be planted by Moseley in Bloom volunteers at Moseley Millennium Wood in Cannon Hill Park – supplementing the planting that was originally carried out in 2000 with another 120 tree saplings in other sites in and around Moseley.

The RHS Britain in Bloom has teamed up with the Woodland Trust to give away up to 200,000 free tree saplings to RHS Britain in Bloom 2011 Finalists – including Moseley in Bloom. Both the RHS and the Woodland Trust are supporting the United Nation’s 2011 International Year of Forests to raise awareness of conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and recognise the benefits trees bring to our wildlife and communities.

Back in 2005 a tornado struck Kings Heath, Moseley and Balsall Heath wreaking destruction and uprooting many old street trees. Moseley in Bloom then recently formed a mission to replace the many street trees that were destroyed – planting over 157 street trees to date.

Moseley in Bloom volunteers of all ages will be planting hazel, hawthorn, birch, rowan, cherry and dogwood saplings to give year round colour at Moseley Millennium Wood, Cannon Hill Park (near Holders Lane) between 11am-1pm on Sunday 27th March. Moseley in Bloom is inviting anyone to come along and take part. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Moseley in Bloom on 07588 868 533 or email info@moseleyinbloom.org.uk.

RHS Britain in Bloom showcases the very best in community horticulture and attracts thousands of entrants each year. A total of 77 cities, towns, villages and urban communities from across the UK have made it through to the 2011 finals – including Moseley in Bloom who will wait with baited breath until the September awards ceremony in St. Andrews to see how they have fared.

Adam Styler, Moseley in Bloom Volunteer Coordinator, said, “Since the tornado destruction in 2005, Moseley in Bloom have embarked on a tree planting initiative to replace those that were lost. This helps to build upon that campaign. This is a great opportunity for our community to be part of a national event helping to develop the Moseley Millennium Woodland planting that started here in November 2000. Not only are we helping to double the amount of woodland in the UK – making it a more pleasant place for us to live, but we will also be making a significant improvement for the local wildlife that is struggling to survive in our ever growing city.”

Stephanie Eynon, Community Horticulture Manager, RHS, said, “RHS Britain in Bloom and RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood enables people to join together to improve their local communities and restore civic pride through long-term, sustainable projects which are also beneficial for wildlife. We are delighted to be partnering with the Woodland Trust in order to focus this year’s launch on trees.”

If you haven’t already heard, the volunteers of Moseley in Bloom won two awards this year for their work and endeavors to enhance the local community.

Firstly, the regional Heart of England judges awarded the Gold and Category winners award to Moseley in Bloom on September 16th. Then on 29th October, Moseley in Bloom was awarded a Silver Gilt award at the prestigious awards ceremony held at the Centenary Centre for the national Britain in Bloom campaign.

These are excellent awards to receive and shows just how much hard work and dedication volunteers and businesses have put in for the community in which we work, live and socialise in. The Urban Communities category was the most difficult category to be entered into and had the highest number of entries.

The impression we received when visiting the judges their open surgery of 30th September on was that we were not far away from the Gold so it gives us something to strive for in the near future!

Whilst we are thoroughly proud with the results, there is plenty more for us to do to enhance our community!

Our “Trees Please” programme was formed as a direct result of the tornado that decimated Moseley back in July 2005 and looks to replace the many trees that were destroyed and add some more.

During the past 5 years, we have planted 157 trees on the streets of Moseley which has been recognised both locally and nationally.

The programme involves working with councillors and the Birmingham City Parks and Nurseries suggesting which trees should be planted and where on the streets on Moseley. The project also looks to encourage local residents to plant trees in their front garden as part of the front gardens campaign.

The role itself is flexible and will be left to you to organise, feeding back to the monthly Moseley in Bloom committee – giving you considerable freedom on how you think it should be run. The objective however is simple! To ensure that we continue the programme of planting street trees in areas where it is needed and to devise a way in which to encourage local residents to plant trees in their front gardens.

If you want to be part of the winning team and you’re up for the challenge, contact us!

Moseley in Bloom participates in the Urban Community category in the Heart of England region, which includes Staffordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and the West Midlands. There are 13 different categories, ranging from large city to small village and entries are assessed against a rigorous set of criteria, under the headings of Horticultural Achievement (50%), Environmental Responsibility (25%) and Community Participation (25%).

The setting for this year’s presentation was the splendor of Pershore Abbey with over 300 people attending including several Lord Mayors and other notable dignitaries. Birmingham did really well. There were two Special Awards for our fellow ‘Bloomers’ in Balsall Heath, firstly, the Litter Management Award and secondly the School Involvement Award for Tindal School.

Fox Hollies School, via Kings Heath, got the Special Award for Endeavour and Determination. We were also thrilled that Moseley in Bloom got a Certificate of Merit for our Meteoric Make-over project for the Bristol Street Motors site.

There were 45 Category Awards, and by the time it came to the Urban Community category, our nerves were on edge. There were 7 entries in our category and they started with the lowest awards first. Two entries received Silver, three, including Kings Heath and Balsall Heath received Silver Gilts, so we realized that we must have kept our Gold. They then announced Birmingham City Centre, who also achieved Gold, but then came Moseley in Bloom, achieving Gold as well as Category Winner! We were over the moon and it was with great pride for the achievement of all our Moseley Bloomers that Jan Miller – Chair of Moseley in Bloom received the certificates and the engraved vase.

But that was not the end of it. Just before the end of the proceedings, the judges announced that the Heart of England in Bloom was putting forward three nominations for the National Britain in Bloom competition for 2010.These were Norton, in the small village category, Solihull in the City category and Moseley in the Urban Community category.

We couldn’t have hoped for more. This is an amazing accolade for all the people in Moseley and beyond who have contributed in so many different ways. We have been amazed at the support we have received this year, particularly with regard to our Meteoric Make-over at the Bristol Street Motors site, and special thanks are due to Four Seasons nursery, for adults with learning difficulties, who planted and grew the 900 seeds required for the site. Many people from diverse interests and backgrounds, including some from Midland Mencap and Midland Heart Charity for recovering addicts, as well as local passers-by have joined us in weeding, digging, planting etc and the team spirit was brilliant, even in the pouring rain! We would also like to thank Alan Corrigan and his street-cleaning crew, but particularly Scott and Tony, who take such pride in cleaning our streets, as well as Graham and Kim, our street wardens.

Many have commented on how good the Village has been looking. Moseley is a great place to live and it is gratifying to see this recognized in the ‘In Bloom’ awards – now we just have to find somewhere to display our certificates and trophy.

The work now starts for the national Britain in Bloom competition and we want to achieve more and really go for Gold in 2010. We will be working harder than ever and already projects are being planned and developed.

If anyone would like to join in the hive of activity, whether it is to be part of the committee or as a volunteer, email info@moseleyinbloom.org.uk.

Volunteers appeared in their abundance at the Bristol Street Motor’s site on St Mary’s Row on both Saturday and Sunday to ensure that the project got off to a good start. We also had volunteers on Friday to hand to help dig through and load compost which Four Season Nursery donated – ready for use over the weekend. Glenn Fraser was on hand to show what needed to be done with his design masterpeice.

On Saturday, Lewis Hands and his team from Melton Tree Surgeons gave their expertise in trimming back the trees and removing ashes on the Oxford Road side of the site, whilst the remainder of the volunteers concentrated in ensuring the beds on Wake Green Road would be suitable for planting on 6th and 7th June. Trenches were dug and new compost laid to ensure that a good coverage would bloom this summer.

Sunday saw many of the volunteers return along with extra help from others within the local Moseley community with the Elmhurst Dance School Sixth Form students lending a hand to dig through and improve the bedding area on Oxford Road as well as making a start on clearing the forecourts.

All of the 40+ volunteers answered calls from local advertisements in Moseley requesting help over the weekend and gave up their own time in supporting the project. Moseley in Bloom would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved that took part and helped. This ensured that the weekend was fun and enjoyable for all.

It was clear from the general public passing by that this area needs a make over until the time comes when planning permission is approved for the site. This may yet take some time, but since this is a prominent eyesore in Moseley and is on one of the main entry routes into the area, action had to be taken. The public are appreciative of the work that is taking place and now looking forward to what is going to be on display this summer.

Work now continues to plan ahead for the second phase of the Meteoric Makeover project which will include the planting up of the Bristol Street Motors site which will take place on the weekend of 6th and 7th June.

If you would like to volunteer for this, please contact Adam Styler on 07961 434869 or email info@moseleyinbloom.org.uk.

While a planning application for this former car showroom site is currently under consideration, any future development is uncertain until planning permission is granted. It may therefore be some time before any work starts at this site. Having already laid empty for over a year, the grass and weeds have grown and the frontage now sports a look which is at best forlorn and at worst an eyesore. And that look is ‘so last season’.

Fortunately the site developers (Exmax Moseley) agree, and have given permission for the raised bed and perimeter fencing to be planted up with a dense tropical screen of green foliage and summer flowering annuals and climbers. They have also offered much-needed sponsorship to fund the project, making them a Moseley in Bloom ‘Platinum Sponsor’.

Our local horticultural supporters from the aptly named Four Seasons Nursery have been lovingly nurturing seedlings under glass, ready for planting in a few weeks’ time, when the risk of late frosts should have passed. The nursery is a social enterprise run by Birmingham City Council Services for Adults with Learning Disabilities, based at Chamberlain House Training Centre on Yew Tree Road, where they grow herbaceous and summer bedding plants, herbs and vegetables for sale to the public. Their previous involvement has included planting up a three-tier display planter on Victoria Parade as well as the planters at St Mary’s Church.

If you’re worried about empty shops and businesses being boarded up and disused sites lying idle then consider helping to transform this derelict forecourt into an unexpected urban garden and make your village really bloom this summer. Volunteers are also needed to help with spring planting outside the park entrance too.
