On Tuesday 8th November, Moseley in Bloom held its annual awards night at The Cross in Moseley. These awards are made to the people and establishments that have shown particular support for Moseley in Bloom throughout the season – helping them to win Gold. It is also an opportunity for Moseley in Bloom to celebrate their achievements with local residents and businesses.

Since the introduction of the awards, a certain element of competition has grown up within the community and the awards are usually prominently displayed for customers and clients to see.

The judging for the awards were unannounced so there can be no special preparation. The judges this year were James Brain of Oulsnam’s Estate Agents, Mike Currie of Birmingham Parks and Nurseries, Nikki Carr, Town Centre Manager for Moseley and Kings Heath and Alison Millward from Reddings Road Residents’ Association.

Adam Styler, Deputy Chair of Moseley in Bloom said “This is a great opportunity for us to say thank you to our community for the support they have shown us – whether it be volunteering in the many projects undertaken or ensuring that they do their bit to make Moseley a pleasant and vibrant place to live, work and socialise. The support and well wishes received from everyone are very encouraging for our volunteer group. Well done to all who have taken part in 2011.”

And the winners are…

A big well done to everyone who supported Moseley in Bloom this year – this is the fifth consecutive year we have won Gold and the 4th year we have been category winners (3rd time consecutively)! That is no mean feat.

Moseley in Bloom also scooped up a fantastic Silver award at the Britain in Bloom celebrations in St Andrews. The competition was stiff but this is great testament to the volunteers and local businesses in Moseley.

Jan Miller, who has chaired Moseley in Bloom for the past three year was given an RHS Britain in Bloom Community Champion Award. The RHS quoted:

“Jan is a key player in the Moseley in Bloom group. She has left no stone unturned in order to brighten up many pockets of land which were previously neglected. She has the drive to encourage people to go the extra mile in order to achieve the desired outcome. Jan operates in a very professional manner and brings all of her many skills to the table in order to further Moseley in Bloom. The Judges are therefore delighted to recognise Jan with the Community Champion Award.”

We are very proud of her achievement and would like to thank her for all her work for Moseley in Bloom. Jan has now moved on to pastures new away from Moseley. The team wish her every success in the future.

A big well done also to Kings Heath Floral Trail who also won gold this year and go through to represent the region in 2012 for the National Britain in Bloom Awards. Moseley in Bloom will be looking at ways to support their counterparts for that national competition.

Balsall Heath also did acheived well and wond a Silver Gilt award!

Well done all!

That’s right, the awards were announced on Thursday 16th September at an awards ceremony heled at New Vic Theatre in Newcastle under Lyme where it was announced the Moseley in Bloom achievied the only gold in the Urban Community category, and thus also becoming overall category winners.

The judges stated “Once again Moseley in Bloom has put together an outstanding entry into the Bloom campaign. The work and the enthusiasm by the volunteers are to be congratulated and this stands out as you go around Moseley.”

Jan Miller, Chair of Moseley in Bloom said:

“We’re thrilled with our continuing success which is a just reward for all the hard work and commitment put in by so many people from the City, both councillors and officers and our wonderful team of committee and volunteers. We also appreciate all the positive comments and interest we get from the people of Moseley.

We’re delighted that our neighbours, Balsall Heath and Kings Heath have also done well, both achieving silver-gilts – and together we’re beginning to transform the A435.”

The National Britain in Bloom results will be anounced on September 29th at an awards evening being hosted in Birmingham. All fingers are crossed in the hope that Moseley in Bloom can improve upon the Silver Gilt award they received for the first time they qualified for the National competition.

The format of this award has changed this year in order to encourage even more members of the community to become involved. We have expanded beyond the pervious area along the judging route and now include most of Moseley, which we have divided into three sections, North, West and East.

Small teams of Moseley in Bloom Volunteers scoured these three areas to find the most flourishing front gardens. The short listed gardens were then assessed by the local judges who decided upon a winner in each section, plus one overall winner of the Most Flourishing Front Garden Award.

Well judgement day for Moseley in Bloom is almost upon us – on Tuesday 14th to be precise! We are now frantically rushing around making sure everything is as it should be ready for when the Judges arrive. And we need your help – whether your are a local business or a resident in the area.

We will be doing one final weekends worth of work for the season this coming weekend (Saturday 11th, Sunday 12th and Monday 13th) to ensure that Moseley is in its most pristine condition. Please help us keep the streets clean and do your bit. You could even be in the chance to win a Moseley in Bloom Award! To enter use the form below:

MIB Awards Entry Form

Last year, Moseley won the Silver Gilt award for the National Britain in Bloom campaign, and the Gold award for the regional Heart of England in Bloom campaign for the work volunteers like yourself have put in.

Whilst we are unable to go for Gold in the National awards this year (we can’t enter for two consecutive years), we certainly want to keep hold of the Gold award we currently have for the regional award.

Regardless of what the judges may think; I firmly believe that we all deserve this award for the hard graft that we have all contributed for the community. Without your help and support – none of what we have accomplished could have happened… Just look at what we have done this year:

The Autumn Bulb Planting – this took place in November in the pay and display car park and gave colour to those visiting Moseley

The Meteoric Makeover – over two weekend’s worth of work transforming the barren site into stunning oasis that is already turning heads

The Open Gardens Weekend – the most successful we have put on attracting over 1000 visitors (many of whom have travelled afar) helping to fund future floral displays

The Farmers Markets – our very own stall on the farmers market helping to fundraise for projects in our community

These are just a few occasions where you have helped us. Without you – none of this could have happened.

Finally, thank you all in advance for you time and efforts so far this year. You have all done a sterling job and should be proud of yourselves. It really has helped to bring the community together and already Moseley is looking vibrant. Whether or not we do well to impress judges this year – that is not the real reason why we are doing this – it is to bring the best out of where we live. This is the real prize!

I hope to see you all over the weekend and let’s show these judges what we have got in store for them!

Best wishes
